Our mission

The first-ever Ocracoke Red Drum Shootout took place on September 21, 2024. Organized by locals and friends of Ocracoke, this event was a annual fundraiser. The Ocracoke Red Drum Shootout is a nonprofit and was under the 501(c)(3) umbrella of the Ocracoke Foundation for its first year.

In 2025, the Ocracoke Heritage Initiative, Inc. was formed, a Nonprofit 501(c)(3) (application pending). We want to thank the Ocracoke Foundation for having us under their organization to help us get started.

Each year, the Ocracoke Red Drum Shootout Board Of Directors will choose one or more projects or organizations to receive the proceeds.

For 2024 and 2025, the funds went to the Ocracoke Working Watermen's Association to support their education and outreach efforts, and for the ongoing preservation and renovation of the Ocracoke Seafood Company, the island's last remaining fish house.

For 2026, tournament proceeds will continue to support Ocracoke Working Watermen’s Association, and will also include:

• Ocracoke's Community Lunch Program, which provides hot meals Monday - Friday to island seniors and residents who depend on this essential service.
‍
• The British Cemetery, one of Ocracoke’s most treasured historic landmarks, which relies on volunteers and private donations for ongoing care, maintenance, and preservation.
